AUBURN — Albert Harold Gengnagel passed away Friday, December 26, 2014, surrounded by his wife and four daughters at his home in Auburn, Indiana, at the age of 77. Al was born on January 21, 1937, and graduated from Auburn High School in 1955 and The University of Mississippi in 1960. Al and his father, Harold Gengnagel, proudly owned the Gengnagel Fuel and Lumber Company for many decades before successfully venturing into real estate and appraising. His business acumen served him well as the president of the Auburn Chamber of Commerce in 1976. Al was a classic car enthusiast, an owner of two original Auburn automotives and proudly served as the vice president of the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Festival for 20 years and a lifetime member of the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Museum. Mr. Gengnagel was proud of his membership in the Masonic Lodge 214 of the Scottish Rite and Mizpah. Al deeply enjoyed his title of Honorable Kentucky Colonel and shared the yearly elite experiences with his family during the Kentucky Derby. Furthermore, Mr. Gengnagel was an avid amateur (HAM) radio operator since 1950 and built solid friendships with other operators around the globe. In addition, Al was president of the Auburn Rotary Club and organized Junior Achievement for DeKalb High School for many years. Al is survived by Betty Sue Gengnagel, his beloved wife of 55 years. They married in Yazoo City, Mississippi, in 1959. Preceding in death are Al's parents, Harold Frederick Daniel Gengnagel and Marie Gengnagel. Al is survived by his only sibling, Mary Elizabeth Broad of Canton, OH. He is also survived by his four precious daughters, Susan (Terry) Funkhouser of Carmel, IN, Stacey Bradley of West Lafayette, IN, Sarah Jones (Andy) Comfort of Auburn, IN, and Mary Calhoun (Chad) Jensen of Westfield, IN. Mr. Gengnagel is also survived by eight grandchildren, Barclay and Baker Funkhouser, Sydney and Avery Bradley, Sam and Claire Comfort, Chayse and Kate Jensen. A church service commemorating Mr. Gengnagel's life will at the Auburn Presbyterian Church on Monday, December 29, 2014, at 4:00 p.m. followed by a private burial. The Rev. Lyle Ewing will be officiating. Al's pallbearers will be Barclay Funkhouser, Sam Comfort, Mike Haggarty, Dr. Don Derrow, Dave Winebrenner, Pic Pickett, Larry Spade and Adam Harvey. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. John Harvey, Don Mefford, Grant VanHorne and Ray Collins. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Auburn Presbyterian Church.
