Don EkenaELMWOOD – Donald "Don" E. Ekena, 84, of Elmwood, passed away at 9:42 a.m. at Farmington Country Manor on Thursday, December 8, 2016.He was born on May 22, 1932, in Brimfield, to Harvey and Pearl (Shane) Ekena. He married June M. Sollenberger on December 2, 1955, at the Lutheran Church in Brimfield. She survives.Also surviving are three children, Gregory Ekena of Elmwood, Coleen (Dennis) Nieders of Maquon, and Scott (Jessica) Ekena of Elmwood; one sister, Sharon Worley; one brother, Berwyn Ekena; and four grandchildren, Jared (Molly Bauman) Nieders, Taylor (Evyn Garrett) Nieders, and Garrett and Ruby Ekena. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Jacqueline Howard.Don was a Machinist at Caterpillar, retiring in 1992. He served in the Army from 1952 to 1954. Don was a lifetime member of Legion Post #638 and the V.F.W. #4724. He also served on the Elmwood City Council for 20 years and was a volunteer fireman for the Elmwood Fire Department for 30 years.Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, December 12, 2016, at the United Methodist Church in Elmwood.
