Dora Sansbury Schwartz July 28, 1938 - December 5, 2016 Fuquay-Varina Dora Sansbury Schwartz, 78, went peacefully home to the Lord at WakeMed Cary Hospital on December 5, 2016, with her husband and three sons at her side. She was born on July 28, 1938, in Goldsboro, NC to Austin (Jack) Baxter Sansbury and Doris Copeland Sansbury. Dora graduated from Lumberton High School in Lumberton, NC, and Kansas Wesleyan University in Salina, KS with a bachelor's degree in English. During the early years of her marriage, she taught school until the arrival of her own children. While a full-time mother and wife, she earned a master's degree in counseling from East Carolina University, Greenville, NC. She worked as a high school guidance counselor at Kinston High School in Kinston, NC for 15 years until her retirement. Through her love of education, Dora had a profound impact on many people's lives. She had a passion to encourage her students to attend college and helped make it possible by finding financial aid and scholarships to allow dozens to attend who were the first in their family and otherwise would not have been able. Dora married David Lee Schwartz from Russell, KS on February 14, 1960. Throughout their 56 years of marriage, she was a devoted wife and proud and loving mother and grandmother. Dora lived in many different places due to her husband's engineering/ construction career and accumulated lifelong friends across the country. She cherished her friendships and was a wonderful, caring person to those who knew her. Her keen sense of humor allowed her to laugh not only at herself but at life in general. She loved the water and the ocean and cherished the many years spent at Emerald Isle, NC and Florida. From riding in boats to walking on the beach finding sea shells and shark's teeth or just sitting to enjoy the sun and the ocean waves crashing on the sand with friends and family, Dora was happy on the beach. Dora was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, counselor, and friend – she will be dearly missed. Dora had strong faith in Jesus Christ and was always an active member in a church family wherever she lived including Gordon Street Christian Church for many years in Kinston, NC and her last church, Fuquay-Varina United Methodist Church. She was also a member of organizations throughout her life including The Humane Society, the ASPCA, the Audubon Society, Meals-on-Wheels, Colonial Dames Society, Daughters of the American Revolution and many others. She relished the connections and friendships she made through her volunteer activities. She is survived by her husband and best friend, David, her three sons and their wives; Doug & Lisa of Charleston, SC; Greg & Susan of Plano, TX; and Jack & Elizabeth of New Bern, NC. She has seven grandchildren including Doug's children, Brandon (Naples, FL), Caitlin (Bristol, CT) and Cameron (Charleston, SC); Greg's children, David and Drew (Plano, TX); and Jack's children, Annabelle (New Bern, NC) and Lainie Hicks (San Marcos, TX). Survivors also include her niece Pamela Johnson (Tommy) and great-niece Ashley (Asheboro, NC); and nephew, Austin Baxter Sansbury III and great-nieces Stella and Ruby (Hampton, VA). She was preceded in death by her parents and her twin brother, Austin Sansbury, Jr. A memorial service will be held at Fuquay-Varina United Methodist Church on Saturday, January 7th at 2:00 pm with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, to honor her love of animals, especially dogs, memorial contributions may be made to an animal rescue organization, Fuquay-Varina United Methodist Church or other .
