Dorothy Mathis, passed away peacefully and went to be with the Lord on Sunday, November 18, 2018 at home in bed. Dorothy was born in Raleigh, North Carolina and attended and graduated from Oberlin Elementary and Washington High Schools. After High School, she attended and graduated from Shaw University, Raleigh, NC with a degree in Education. Dorothy taught in North Carolina for several years. During Mayor Richard Hatcher's administration, and Doctor Watson, a former Raleigh Principal, becoming Superintendent of Gary Public Schools, a call went out for minority teachers to enter the Gary School System. Gladys and many other graduates from Shaw University left North Carolina to enter the call. Gladys was a dedicated teacher and taught in the Gary Public Schools for 32 years, and along the way she received her master's in Education from Indiana University. Gladys also received many school awards and worked in the community and was a faithful church member. Glady's then moved to Southern Illinios to be near her two daughters and grandchildren. Gladys was preceded in death by her parents the late Charles W. Hunter, Sr. and Gladys Brown Hunter, brother Charles W. Hunter, Jr. and sisters-in-law Josephine H. and Shirley B. Hunter. She is survived by daughters Wanda Cooks of O'fallon , Illinois, Angela Bracken of Saint Louis, Missouri. Gladys has several grandchildren, nieces and nephews . She was genuinely loved by her family and friends and will be greatly missed by those that knew her.
