Dwight M. HarringtonDes MoinesDwight Morris Harrington, age 83, passed away on November 11, 2017, at Valley View Village Care Facility due to complications of Parkinson's disease. Dwight was born on a farm near Percy, Iowa on March 21, 1934, the third of five children to J. Lester and M. Irene (Morris) Harrington. The family moved to Des Moines in 1935. He was a very active youth and a hard worker delivering two papers daily, the morning Register and the evening Tribune, in addition to washing dishes at General Hospital. Dwight started high school at Des Moines Tech, then transferred to East High, graduating in 1952. After graduation, he entered the
United States Marine Corps, serving during the
Korean War Conflict. When he returned in 1955, he worked for Armstrong Rubber Manufacturing until March of 1956 when he started with the Des Moines Fire Department, retiring in January of 1994. He also worked for Iowa Children and Family Services for 27 ½ years and part-time for Phil Johnson's Florist.Dwight is survived by his wife of 61 years, Ruby; daughters, Sharel (Jim) Short and Debra Mitchell; son, Daney Harrington; grandchildren, Angelia (Clint) Rogers, Shaun (Toni) Short, Jacob Harrington and Jared Harrington; great-grandchildren, Cole Rogers and Addison Rogers; sisters, Donna O'Callaghan, Juanita Gustin and Phyllis (Jack) Sutton; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, John O. Harrington.Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m., Thursday, November 16, 2017, at Hamilton's Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Funeral service will begin at 2:30 p.m., Friday, November 17, also at Hamilton's, and will be followed by cremation.
