Florence Elizabeth (Little) RankinNORTH CANTON: Florence Elizabeth (Little) Rankin, warmly known as Flo, passed away peacefully on November 30, 2016 as a result of pneumonia brought on as a secondary consequence of the bone marrow disease HLH. Flo was born on March 6, 1949 in Lexington, Kentucky to Hazel and Charles Little and had three siblings: Debby, Sharon, and David. In her early years the family lived in Chicago, eventually moving to Columbus where Flo graduated from Walnut Ridge High School in 1967. She earned a Bachelor's Degree from Muskingum University in 1971, and Master's Degrees from THE
Ohio State University and from Kent State University. Flo worked in public education for more than 35 years in a variety of roles. She began her career as an English teacher in the Columbus Public Schools and then taught English and speed reading at Westerville High School. After staying at home for several years raising her two sons, Flo became the librarian at Clearmount Elementary School in North Canton, Ohio. She loved dressing up as the Cat in the Hat and reading Dr. Seuss books to children. She subsequently became the librarian at the North Canton Middle School and finally was the district library media coordinator and head librarian at Hoover High School for 17 years. While at the high school, Flo served as the National Honor Society advisor and was a member of the NCCS Athletic Council. In addition, she served on the board of trustees of the North Canton Heritage Society and the North Canton Public Library. Flo also volunteered at the Hoover Historical Center. Flo met her husband Dave, whom she fondly called Sparky, at Muskingum University in New Concord, Ohio. They were married in 1971 and enjoyed 45 years of marriage. They have two sons: Andy (wife Di) of North Canton and Scott (wife Erin) of Mason, Ohio and three grandchildren: Sami (age 8), Hadley (age 7) and Heath (age 4).She was preceded in death by her parents Charles and Hazel Little. She will be greatly missed by her beloved siblings: Debby Richardson (children Rachel and Stephen), Sharon Male (husband Pete and son Anthony), and David Little (wife Sharon and sons Chad, Chris, and Paul). Caring nephews Adam Jones of Cincinnati and Allen (wife Amanda) Jones of San Diego adored Flo as well. Calling hours are on Sunday, December 4, 2016 from 2-4 p.m. at the Reed Funeral Home in North Canton. The funeral service will be held Monday, December 5, 2016 at 11 a.m. at Faith United Methodist Church in North Canton with viewing from 10-11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her honor to the North Canton Public Library and Faith United Methodist Church.
