EAST ALTON — Gary L. Carpenter Sr., 72, passed away peacefully in his home at 10:12 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 17, 2016.
He was born on March 18, 1944, in Hardin, the son of John and Lorraine (Hazelwonder) Carpenter.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Sharon (Minor) Carpenter.
Gary served six years in the U.S. Army Reserves. He worked at the Owens-Illinois Glass Works for 11 years; and retired from Amoco Oil Co. after 24 years.
Gary was an avid golfer and loved spending his time traveling in his motor home with his late wife, spending their winters in Mission, Texas, with friends. He was a devoted, loving husband, father and grandfather who will be dearly missed.
He is survived by two sons, Gary Carpenter Jr. and his wife, Jeannie, and Alan Carpenter, and his wife, Tracey; grandson, Cody Carpenter; two step-grandsons, Christopher and Aaron Bosaw; three sisters, Anna Mae, and the late Perry Heavner, Emma and Sylvester Sievers, Alice and George Adams; a brother, John and Sandy Carpenter; along with many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 12 p.m. until time of service at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 21 at Marks Mortuary in Wood River.
Cremation services will be accorded following the service.
