George "Rufus" Fleming was born on June 17, 1924, in Dougherty County, Georgia. He was the beloved son of the late Nancy Lee Davis and John Lee Fleming.
He attended the public schools of Dougherty County, including Monroe High School where he was involved in numerous school organizations and activities.
Throughout his childhood, Rufus was nurtured in the Word of God. At the age of 12, he professed his faith and belief in Christ and united with the Third Kiokee Missionary Baptist Church. He served faithfully in various capacities in the church for numerous years. On November 9, 2011, he united with the River Road Church of Christ (now Church of Christ at Gaines Avenue). He was a devoted servant of the Lord and his faith never wavered.

Over the years, he labored tirelessly as a tile-setter assistant at J. L. Davis Tile Setters until becoming disabled. No matter what the assignment, he looked upon each task with equal importance and prided himself in a job well done.
