Ilona Fulop Obituary

Jan 23, 1932 - Nov 06, 2017

This obituary is administered by:
Fulop, Ilona Age 85, of Hartford, Wisconsin, passed away on November 5, 2017 at Serenity Villa in Slinger, Wisconsin. She was born on January 22, 1932, in Kapuvar, Hungary, to Istvan and Ilona Molnar. Ilona met Emery, her high school sweetheart, in church while sharing her prayer book. They married on August 14, 1955 at St. Anna Catholic Church in Kapuvar. Ilona was strong-willed and dedicated to her faith. While attending school in Hungary, she was the only student who refused to sign a declaration denouncing Cardinal Jozsef Mindszenty, an imprisoned political opposer. Despite being interrogated publicly by government officials in the school auditorium, she still refused to sign and was expelled from school. During the 1956 Hungarian Revolution, Ilona, along with her husband, parents and five-month-old son James, escaped and settled in Milwaukee. The St. Vincent DePaul Society sponsored Ilona and her family. She continued her study in the U.S., finishing a degree in accounting from Spencerian College. She utilized her many talents owning and operating several family businesses, first the Sunshine Orchard in West Bend, then the Colony Motel in Menomonee Falls, and later the Silver Bell Motel in Hartford. She also held several part-time positions as an accountant, an H&R Block tax advisor, a real estate broker, and a Berlitz translator for Hungarians in the court system, all this while raising seven children and supporting her husband Emery. Ilona learned needlepoint from the elderly village ladies in Kapuvar when she was three years old. She enjoyed embroidering, crocheting, knitting, and sewing, including sewing suits for her husband and quilts for the kids. More than anything, she enjoyed being entertained by her children and grandchildren, and time spent with Emery. She was much loved and will be deeply missed. Ilona is survived by seven children, James (special friend, Maureen DeMilia) of Houston, TX, Marianne (David) Bovee of Thiensville, Steven of Neoga, IL, Joseph (Patty) of Hartford, Thomas (Ann) of Normal, IL, Richard of Port Washington and Elizabeth Skowera of Hartford; grandchildren, Tony Szabo, Josef, Michael, Daniel, Peter, Nicholas, Rachael, Robert Neitzer, Benjamin, Mylah; Vincent, Izabella and Jade Skowera; brother-in-law, Lengyel Jozsef; also survived by other relatives and friends. Ilona is preceded in death by parents and beloved husband Emery and much loved sister, Lengyel Erzsebet. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Kilian Catholic Church, (264 W. State St., Hartford) on Thursday, November 9 at 1:00 PM with Fr. David LaPlante presiding. Visitation at the church from 11:00 AM until the time of Mass. Committal at Holy Trinity Cemetery, Newburg. In lieu of flowers, memorials are appreciated to St. Vincent DePaul Society. A special thank you to all the caregivers at Serenity Villa.
