Ja’Zareyah Was born premature at 24 weeks weighing 1 pound 4 ounces with an urgent admission in the VCU Medical Center NICU. During her three months here on earth, she touched many lives and was loved deeply by family, and among them was the entire VCU-NICU team. Her life was a brief and precious gift to all of us.
Jazzie’s cause of death was Necrotizing Enterocolitis (NEC), which is a devastating disease that affects mostly the intestines of premature infants, which was hard to fight in an infant of her size. Since birth she was a feisty fighter, made the funniest facial expressions, and made it known when she was being bothered with those expressions. She would recognize your voice and respond to it, whether it was a smile, a long stretch, pouting her lips or putting her hand over her face. Jazzie was one the smallest baby’s born doing the most and everyone that took care of her, loved her in so many ways.
