Lucille Ann Stiner Obituary

Feb 08, 1923 - Jan 25, 2016

This obituary is administered by:
Stiner, Lucille Ann Lucille Ann Jakel Stiner, age 93, of Tempe, Arizona, died December 25, 2016, at Saint Joseph's Hospital in Phoenix, Arizona. Lucille was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was born on February 8, 1923 - the fourth of nine children born to Wisconsin dairy farmer, Charles William Jakel and his wife, Anna Thecla Wachmuth Jakel. Lucille was confirmed in the German Reformed Church in Curtiss, Wisconsin, in 1936 by the Rev. Herman Hartman. In 1944, Lucille graduated from Saint Joseph's Nursing School in Marshfield, Wisconsin and enlisted in the United States Army. After induction at Fort McCoy, Wisconsin at the rank of 2nd Lieutenant she was transferred to Camp Blanding, Florida. There, she met Paul Stiner as he was convalescing from malaria contracted while fighting in New Guinea. Upon meeting Lucille, Paul Stiner enjoyed telling folks that he told the soldier in the bed next to him, "That nurse does not know it yet but she is going to be my wife." Sure enough, Paul and Lucille were married on July 22, 1945, after a three month courtship. After the war, Lucille was a homemaker on the Stiner family farm just 9 miles west of Kingfisher, Oklahoma. There, Paul and Lucille raised their five children, Frances, Paul, Jr., Larry, Kathy and Joel. Then, in 1962, for health reasons, the Stiners moved to Tempe, Arizona. Paul became a school teacher in the Scottsdale School District while Lucille worked as a Registered Nurse at the Priest Road Clinic in Tempe then owned by Drs. Frank Stump and Leland Bull. In 1966, Lucille accepted a position as a nurse at Meyer Elementary School until her retirement in 1982. Paul and Lucille were members of the First Christian Church. They also attended Grace Community Church of the Valley and, later on in retirement, attended The Church on Mill near Arizona State University. In addition to her vocation, Lucille had a wide range of interests. She loved playing, by ear, the piano and trumpet - at the same time! She also enjoyed cooking - making notoriously delicious doughnuts, cinnamon and pecan rolls. She had a real penchant for gardening and could grow things where others could not! Lucille was a lifelong learner and so, later in life, she learned calligraphy. She would inscribe inspiring and famous quotations that now adorn many walls. Also, later in life, she learned tatting from her friend Mary Lou Tiffany and she enjoyed making tatted bookmarks and coffee coasters for friends, family and neighbors. She was an avid reader and every morning after reading the Arizona Republic she would complete its crossword puzzle - in ink! In addition to her family, she was especially fond of her neighbors - a very special group of people to her. Lucille's children are grateful for the kindness her neighbors also continually showed to her. Lucille was fond of just about anyone her children brought home for a visit. She could hold her own in a game of billiards on the family pool table and she was a devoted college and professional basketball fan who knew team and player statistics. She could talk basketball with the most devoted basketball enthusiasts. Lucille was preceded in death by her husband, Paul R. Stiner and her siblings Arnold, Elmer, Elaine, Carl, Robert, Dennis and Beatrice and grandchild, Heather. She is survived by her sole remaining brother Dale Jakel of Barron, Wisconsin who just visited Lucille during Thanksgiving 2016 - a few weeks ago! She is also survived by all of her children, Frances C. Hendry of Bear Valley Springs, California; Paul Stiner, Jr. of Chandler, Arizona; Larry D. Stiner and his wife Teresa of Bear Valley Springs, California; Kathryn A. Stiner of Casa Grande, Arizona and Joel A. Stiner and his wife Shannon of Nipomo, California. She is also survived by 16 grandchildren - Tracie McBroom and her husband Peter; Jennifer Slack, Heidi Traywick and her husband Daniel; Justin Stiner, Terry Solomon and his wife Randi; Todd Solomon,Tracy Solomon, Stacy Ortega and her husband Ignacio; Michaela Aikins and her husband Nick, Ryan-Paul Stiner and Rachel Stiner and 14 great grandchildren - Brandon Slack, Seth Traywick, Christopher Solomon, Tosha Solomon, Jesse Solomon, Kenna Solomon, Derrick Solomon, Jake Noziska, Ignacio Ortega, Demaris Ortega, Isias Ortega, Guillermo Ortega, Nicole Feyas, and, as of December 19, 2016, Revel Aikins. Friends, family and acquaintances are invited to a memorial service honoring the life of Lucille at Resthaven / Carr-Tenney Mortuary & Memorial Gardens, 4310 East Southern Avenue, Phoenix, Arizona on Saturday, February 11, 2017 at 12:00 pm. There will be a reception immediately following the service. Lucille will be interred with her husband, Paul Stiner, during a private family service at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to Lucille's favorite charity, the Salvation Army, Post Office Box 52177 Phoenix, Arizona 85072.
