Peter Bernhardt of Alabaster Township passed away on Sunday, April 10, 2011, in Flemington, N.J., at the age of 93. Peter was born on Dec. 17, 1917, in Elkton to John and Mary (nee Essler) Bernhardt. He was employed as a maintenance foreman for the U.S. Gypsum plant in Alabaster, where he retired after 40 years of faithful service. Among his many interests in life, Peter truly enjoyed golfing, hunting, fishing, gardening and spending time in his flower garden. He will be always remembered as being a very avid Detroit Tigers fan. He married his wife, Agnes Snider, on June 15, 1940, in Elkton. Together, they celebrated 47 wonderful years of marriage. Agnes preceded him in death on March 21, 1987. Peter is also preceded in death by a granddaughter, Kristie Stafford; a brother, Joseph Bernhardt; sister, Elsie Englehardt; sister, Martha Draschil; and a brother, John Bernhardt. Peter is survived by his two children, son, Richard (Emilie) Bernhardt of Lupton and daughter, Jodi (Donald) Hopkins of Saint Petersburg, Fla.; three grandchildren, Brenda (Stan) Singell, Nicole Bernhardt and Bethany Bernhardt; four great-grandchildren, AJ, Lynn, Jason and Shannon; one sister, Susan Dinkel of Caro; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Per his wishes, cremation has taken place and a celebration of his life will take place on Saturday, April 30, 11:30 a.m., at Buresh Funeral Home in Tawas City with the Rev. Kenneth Tousley officiating. Memorial contributions may be directed to Tawas St. Joseph Hospice and envelopes will be provided at the funeral home.
