Phyllis Joan McClure went to be with her Lord and Savior on December 1, 2016, at the age of 84. Phyllis was born on February 17, 1932 in Chatsworth, California. Early in her childhood she moved to Buttonwillow, enjoyed life on the family farm along with her 4 siblings. She graduated from Bakersfield High School in 1950. While in high school she fell in love with a young school bus driver just back from WW2. Robert McClure and Phyllis were married, July 22, 1950. Married for 44 years, Robert and Phyllis raised 4 children, Nancy, David, John, and Michael. Phyllis faithfully cared for her family and provided a warm loving household. One of her greatest joys was being a mom and a grandma. In 1969 Phyllis went to work for See's Candy, working at the College Heights and downtown stores. Later she was promoted to manager of the Valley Plaza Store, completing a 35-year career in 2004. Although she was highly allergic to chocolate, it was a favorite topic of conversation as she loved to share the secret of how to tell what was inside each one.In 1994, upon the passing of her husband, Phyllis participated in running the long-time family business, McClure Equipment, Inc. The legacy of her husband's work, the McClure family, and the employees had a special place in her heart. She is survived by her three children: Nancy (Bill) Comstock of Lake Carroll, IL, David (Leslie) McClure of Chino Hills, CA, Michael (Christine) McClure of Bakersfield, CA, 11 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, her twin sister Doris Barns (Bakersfield, CA) and youngest sister Christine (John) Bruhn (Davis, CA), and four sisters-in-law: Jackie Mattson, Marilyn Mattson, Shirley Carey, and Kathy McClure, numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews. She was proceeded in death by her husband, Robert L. McClure, parents, Dewitt and Helen Mattson, son, John McClure and two brothers, Don and Roy Mattson. The family is deeply grateful for the outpouring of love, prayers, and support from friends and family, too numerous to name individually, but including the caring doctors and ICU nurses at Memorial Hospital, her very special friends at The Pointe at Summit Hills, and her dear church family of Central Church of Christ.Phyllis had the gift of encouragement and never knew a stranger. Known for her ease in frequent conversation, she always saw things through a positive lens. Her family and friends will never forget her contagious optimism, and the way she always thought everything was "wonderful." But in our hearts, the ones who knew her, we will always know it was she who was "wonderful."A "Celebration of Life" memorial service will be held on Tuesday, December 20th, 2pm at Central Church of Christ, 425 S. H Street, Bakersfield, CA 93304. A reception will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to: Teen Challenge, 301 Roberts Ln. Bakersfield, CA 93308
