Phyllis M. Northway1926 - 2015Phyllis M. Northway, 88, died on Feb. 27, 2015. A memorial service for her will be held on Friday, July 24, at the First United Methodist Church which was an important part of her life.Phyllis was born on Sept. 10, 1926, at the family farm in Sheboygan Co., Wis., the daughter of Harry and Ruby Garside. She spent her childhood (ages 1 – 17) in Oconomowoc, graduating from Waukesha H.S. She attended UW-Madison, graduating with a degree in Home Economics Education. After teaching Home Economics at Brillion and Waupun High Schools, she entered a 30-year career as a Family Living Educator for UW-Extension, working in Marinette, Fond du Lac and Kenosha Counties.On Sept. 4, 1965, she was united in marriage to J. Donald Northway. Phyllis served as President of the Wisconsin and National Associations of Extension Home Economists. In 1987, she was honored as an Outstanding Alumni of the University of Wisconsin School of Family Resources and Consumer Sciences, and she has received Distinguished Service Awards from UW-Extension, Epsilon Sigma Phi, and the Wisconsin and National Associations of Extension Home Economists.For 25 years, Phyllis wrote a weekly column for the Kenosha News and produced a weekly radio program on WLIP-AM. She also served on the Board of Directors of Hospice Alliance, and as a volunteer at the Kenosha History Center.She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church, serving as lay leader and chairing several committees. She served as President of United Methodist Women at the local and Southeast District levels. She was also a member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, Chapter BO, and of Delta Kappa Gamma.Phyllis is survived by her beloved husband, Don, her sister, Virginia Garside Harnett, 96; nine nieces and one nephew; and numerous great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Wayne Garside. Internment has taken place at Green Ridge Cemetery where her husband was groundskeeper for many years and where she loved to take walks.The memorial service for Phyllis will be held on Friday, July 24 at 1 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church 919 60th St, Kenosha. You are invited to visit with family from Noon to 1 p.m. No flowers please.
