Ronald John Olofson, 80, of Smithwick, SD passed away on January 12, 2017 from congestive heart failure with his wife and son by his side. Ron was born on April 28, 1936 in Yankton, South Dakota to Loyal and Jenny Olofson. Ron graduated from Yankton high school, received his Bachelor degree from Northern State University School of Education in 1958, magna cum laude and received his Masters degree from the University of Utah in 1964. Ron was united in marriage to Sue Allison Smith on August 31, 1956 in Aberdeen and moved to Bishop, CA in 1965 with their two children, Kari and Craig. In 1969, Ron and Sue had their third child Christopher in 1969. Ron taught mathematics at Bishop Union High School from 1965-1975. Ron was a remarkable man, devoted husband, father, brother, uncle, and grandfather. He is proceeded in death by his parents and older brother, Jim. He is survived by his wife, Sue Olofson of Smithwick, SD; children, Kari McIntosh and husband, Dave of Kearney, NE; Craig Olofson of Custer, SD; Chris Olofson and wife, Nikki of Tehachapi, CA; brother, Bob Olofson of Plain City, UT; grandchildren, Kristen Olofson of Bend, OR; Jesse and Lars Olofson, Nash and Harper Franko of Tehachapi, CA; Louie Olofson and ?ancée, Amanda Gleason, Savannah Vollmer and husband, Taylor of San Diego, CA; great grandchild, Braxton Vollmer of San Diego, CA. Ron was an avid outdoorsman, he loved to ?sh, ski and ride his bicycle. He spent his summers working for the Forest Service and spent several summers working in the Bristlecone Pine Forest in the White Mountains. Ron had great love for the Eastern Sierra and enjoyed ?shing and camping at his favorite lakes, Lake Sabrina and South Lake. He loved sports and watching his grandchildren compete. He was a walking encyclopedia of baseball facts. Ron was a great teacher and loved mathematics. Later in his teaching career in Tehachapi, Ron was the advisor of both the ski and bicycle club and gave young kids the opportunity to ski for the first time; he would take a bus load of students up to Mammoth Mountain annually. Ron was a man of strong Christian faith and loved music. He and his loving wife, Sue played the piano and organ together for many years at various churches and communities and one of their favorites was the Bishop United Methodist Church. A celebration of Ron's life will be held at 2pm on Saturday, February 25 at the Prairie View United Methodist Church in Smithwick, SD.
