William C. (Bill) Reid died at home on October 21, 2016. He was 81. Bill was born on January 8, 1935 (as was Elvis) in Portland, Maine to his parents, Hovey and Irene Reid (nee Sweet). He was a graduate of the University of Connecticut and the University of Hartford. Bill married Margaret (Peggy) Reid (nee Wiberg) in 1960. The Reids resided in East Hartford and Vernon during their 56 year marriage. Bill taught middle and high school science in the Hartford schools, and was named Hartford's Teacher of the Year in 1987. He retired in 1999. Bill had countless friends in many circles, including The Salvation Army, the Hartford Public Schools, the East Hartford Little League where he was a coach and Eastern League President for many years, the South United Methodist Church Chancel Choir for which he sang bass, composed, and occasionally directed, and the Vernon Chorale where he sang and was on the Board of Directors. Bill was an avid sports, game and puzzle enthusiast, and would frequently make up his own games (and his own rules). He was a woodworker, photographer, musician, and conversationalist who brought honesty and laughs to every conversation. Bill's love of genealogy resulted in two books, THE REIDS OF CENTREVILLE, NEW BRUNSWICK, and THE MATERNAL ANCESTRY OF WILLIAM CHARLES REID. Bill was predeceased by his parents and his brother Robert Kenneth Reid. He is survived by his wife, his two sons and their families - Timothy and Marian Reid of Manchester and their sons Christopher and William (Will), Jonathan and Jeri Reid of Coventry and their children Kevin, Brian, Harris and Casey. Bill is also mourned by the extended Reid and Wiberg families, as well as many, many close friends. After Bill's death, it was said in tribute that he "lived 81 years, but never spent one day being old." There are no calling hours. Services are private. A memorial celebration will be held at a later date. See Bill's Facebook page for memorial donations.
