Adrian Lamar Grass, 89, passed away on January 19, 2017. He was born on February 20, 1927 in Gastonia, North Carolina. He served in the US Navy in World War II, the Army and the National Guard. After serving his country, he was accepted to a university in hopes of studying engineering. Before his freshman year he had a change of heart and decided on a different path, a career in medicine. With the help of the G.I. Bill, he enrolled at Oxford College of Emory University in Georgia. Upon completion of College, he was accepted to medical school at Bowman Gray Medical School in Wake Forest University. A successful career as an orthopedic surgeon followed in El Paso, Texas. He donated thousands of hours in orthopedic services to Thomason General (now known as University Medical Center of El Paso) and to Providence Hospital. He served as the team orthopedist for UTEP and for multiple high schools in the El Paso area. In his practice he was considered ahead of his time, and near the end of his career he was listed in America's Best Doctors. Adrian took fashion cues from no one! When not treating diseases and injuries, he could be found in his striped overalls gardening, hunting and fishing. These overalls were also donned for formal functions - functions which he tried to dodge! His signature everyday look was apropos to his outdoorsy character. When he retired, he and his wife Carolyn spent nineteen summers in Alaska, salmon fishing on the Klutina River. Quite clearly he loved the outdoors and there was no other place he would rather be! He is survived by his loving wife Carolyn, and his five children Sharon Grass; Adrian Lamar Grass Jr. and his wife Tracy and their two children, Aaron and Danielle; Kathy Grass Smith and her husband Gene; Nancy Benso and her husband Ethan and their two sons, Nicholas and Michael; Brian Grass and his wife Janelle and son, Zachary, and two stepchildren: Julie McKinney and her husband Gary and two children, Crystal and Curtis; and Janiece Ward. He also leaves behind his sister Alice Bell and her husband, Al. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, January 28, 2017 at Martin Funeral Homes West, 128 N. Resler Dr. with a reception to follow in the chapel. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Animal Rescue League of El Paso, 7256 La Junta Drive, Canutillo, TX 79835 or to Rescue Mission of EL Paso, 221 N Lee St, El Paso, TX 79901.
