Aldred Edward Schofield, a longtime resident of Los Alamos, passed from this life at his home in Provo, Utah, early in the morning of Dec. 21, 2012. Aldred was born on Dec. 5, 1922 in Manassa, Colo., the fourth child and second son of Charles Samuel Schofield and Eliza May Bingham. Except for his older brother Charles Bingham Schofield, all of Aldred's siblings preceded him in death. On March 20, 1946, Aldred married Margueriete Knudsen, and they had five children, all of whom survive: Elaine Beck of Provo, Utah; Anthony W. Schofield (Rebecca Rosecrans) of American Fork, Utah; Jeanine Broxton (Harry Broxton) of Provo, Utah; Susan Talley (Gregory Talley) of Vestal, N.Y.; and LaMont E. Schofield (Elaine Clinger) of Orem, Utah. On June 11, 1954, his beloved Margueriete died of cancer, leaving him with five very young children. On Oct. 4, 1956, Aldred married Gaye Garringer, who survives him and was with him as he left this life. They had three children, all of whom survive: Lyle W. Schofield (Nola Weight) of Los Alamos; A. Lynn Schofield (Donna Cseke) of Springville, Utah; and Samuel L. Schofield (Amy Boardman) of Derby, Kan. For Aldred, family was family, with no half-siblings. This strong, lasting bond continues to this day. Aldred was so blessed by his 39 grandchildren and 87 great-grandchildren.Like so many of his generation, after high school Aldred enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps to serve in World War II. He earned the Legion of Merit for his brains, for designing and developing the Lead Gyro Checker for the central station fire control system for the B-29 aircraft, saving countless hours of reconditioning.Aldred's professional career was spent in Los Alamos, where he worked as a high-voltage electrical engineer at the Los Alamos National Laboratory, first in atomic weapons research and later in peacetime atomic research.Aldred loved his large, busy family, and they loved to visit with him. He had a keen, active mind and knew almost everything.Funeral services will be held Dec. 28, 2012 in Provo, Utah. Interment, Utah Veterans Memorial Park, Bluffdale, Utah.
