Alexander Spicer Carrollof Carmel, passed away Friday, October 20, 2017 at his home, surrounded by his family. He was 100 years old. Alex was born on February 1, 1917 in Scranton, PA to the late James Franklin and Muriel Spicer Carroll. He was a 1939 graduate of Williams College in Williamstown, MA and later served in the US Army during WWII.Alex was an investment broker for Thompson & McKinnon, now Wells Fargo, from 1953 until his retirement in 2002. He was senior vice president for sales at T&M and served on its board of directors. During his long career he helped establish more than 100 investment clubs in Indiana, and was twice honored as broker of the year by Registered Representative magazine.Alex was a devoted alumnus of Williams, and adopted Wabash College as a second alma mater, for which established a scholarship fund with friends and colleagues Bob Beck and Jim Price.Alex was the oldest parishioner of Trinity Episcopal Church, Indianapolis, and was a charter member of Crooked Stick Golf Course, Carmel. He was past president of the Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce and was a board member and fund raiser for the American Red Cross, the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, the Indianapolis Children's Museum, and the United Way. When his family was young he was an active member of Junior Achievement, with a flair for teaching young people about business practices. During his retirement Alex passionately supported the Charles A. Tindley Accelerated School, fund-raising on its behalf and organizing a leadership class for its students, most of them from low-income inner-city households.Alex Carroll was a devoted family man of endless energy and optimism, loved and admired by a host of friends from the many communities he served.A memorial service will be held in late December or early January at Trinity Episcopal Church.Alexander was the widower of Marilyn Talbott Carroll, to whom he was married 72 years before her death in October 2015. He is survived by his children, Tracy Carroll (husband, Ralph) Simon, Holly Carroll (husband, Robert H., dec.) Tanguay, Allen T. (wife, Marjorie Hunt) Carroll; grandchildren, Laura C. Tanguay, Tess Carroll, Grace Carroll, Tom Carroll; great granddaughter, Ava Tanguay; and daughter-in-law, Claire de Zengotita. He was preceded in death by his son, Alexander Spicer "Andy" Carroll, Jr. and brother, H. Allen Carroll.Memorial contributions may be made to The American Red Cross or Charles A. Tindley Accelerated School.
