BONTRAGER - Alferd J. 79, of Harrisonburg, VA, formerly of Alden, NY, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 10, 2016, surrounded by his loving family. Mr. Bontrager was born on May 3, 1937 in Clarence, NY and was the son of the late Clarence and Anna Bontrager. He was also preceded in death by a son, Dwight Bontrager. Alferd grew up and worked on the family farm until he joined his father in the auction business. He then added Real Estate to the Auction Business, which he owned and operated for approx. 45 years. This became Bontrager Real Estate and Auction Services. He was president of the NY Auctioneers Association for several years and was involved in church leadership. In 2009, he and his wife moved to Virginia to be close to family. He enjoyed restoring old gas pumps, attending local auctions and serving in the church at New Beginnings. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Roma (Swartzendruber) Bontrager; a son Burdette Bontrager and wife Carolyn and three grandsons: Clayton, Brian and Bradley Bontrager. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, December 17, 2016 at Bontrager Auction Center, 8975 Wortendyke Rd., Batavia, NY at 11 AM. Burial will be private at the Alden Union Cemetery, Alden, NY.
