Alfed Edward Moorer, Jr. ROANOKE, VA - Alfred Edward Moorer, Jr. of Roanoke, Va. passed away on Sunday, October 30, 2016 at the age of 90 surrounded by his family. Ed, born on January 6, 1926, hailed from the low country of Charleston, SC where his ancestors settled around 1735. He was educated at the College of Charleston, took Naval Officer training at the University of Virginia during WWII, and completed his curriculum in law and mathematics at the University of South Carolina in 1948. After almost thirty-five years in various executive positions in the paper and packaging industry, he took early retirement in 1983. In 1984 he began a new career in helping to develop a retirement complex at Brandermill near Richmond, Virginia. After retiring as senior vice president in 1988, he and his wife, Ginny, sought a place closer to their three sons in in Marion, Roanoke, and Williamston, SC. In 1989 they moved to the shores of Claytor Lake on a year-round basis where they enjoyed gardening, fishing, and living the country life of retirement. In 2005 they relocated to Roanoke where they could be near Rick and Jenny and have been surrounded by many special neighbors. Ed was predeceased by his parents, Alfred E. Moorer, Sr. and Frances Guthke Moorer, brother, Robert E. Moorer, and brother-in-law, Charles Rigsby. He is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Virginia Groome Moorer; devoted sons and daughters-in-law, Ed and Debbie, Glenn and Sally, Rick and Jenny; adoring grandchildren and spouses, Katie and Jon Taylor, Ginny and Ryan Shields, Matt and Ashley Moorer, and Angela and Michael Zion; devout sister, Dorothy Moorer Rigsby of Charleston, SC; and several caring nephews and nieces. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to one of the following: Groometown United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund 5005 Groometown Road Greensboro, NC 27407, or to the Melrose Baptist Church Eagle Eyrie Renovation Fund 3520 Peters Creek Road Roanoke, VA 24019. A memorial service to celebrate Ed's life will be held 1 p.m. Friday, November 4, 2016 at Simpson Funeral Home 5160 Peters Creek Road with the Rev. Larry Sprouse officiating.
