Alfred BurtonAlfred Lee Burton, 70, of Granite City, Ill. passed away on Thursday, Dec. 15, 2016 at his home. Alfred was born on March 17, 1946 in Granite City, Ill. to the late Leroy and Alberta (Thomas) Burton. Alfred was a teamster at Local 525 working for the Illinois Department of Transportation for over 30 years. He was a retired fireman with the Long Lake Fire Department and served as president of the Madison County Fireman's Association. Alfred was a member of
V.F.W. Post 204 in Madison, Ill. After retirement, Alfred went on to work at the Granite City School District 9. Alfred was proud to be a fireman and enjoyed helping others but most of all he enjoyed his travels to Arizona and spending time with his family. He especially loved listening to good music and polka dancing with his wife, Maryann. He will be remembered for his kind heart and all the special times he shared with his family and friends.Alfred was preceded in death by his wife; Maryann Burton, nee Zeigler, whom he married on Nov. 24, 1966; his parents; sisters, Carolyn Nesbit, Brenda Timpe; his brother, James Burton.He is survived and will be missed by his son; James (Jodi) Burton of Phoenix, Ariz.; his grandson, Joshua Burton of Phoenix, Ariz.; brothers, Jerry (Martha) Burton of Granite City, Ill., William (Melissa) Burton of Dover, Tenn.; his sisters, Rita White of Granite City, Ill., Mary Nesbit of Belleville, Ill., Ruth (David) Rettig of Belleville, Ill.; many nieces, nephews and other extended family members and friends.Memorials are suggested to the or VITAS Hospice.Visitation: Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 18, 2016 at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City, Ill. Funeral: In celebration of his life, services will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 19, 2016 at the funeral home with Deacon Mike Melton officiating.
