Alfred Newcombe , 93, of Staten Island, New York, passed on August 16, 2023. Alfred was born on November 25, 1929. A graduate of McKee High School, Mr. Newcombe was a crane operator at Brewer's Dry Dock in Mariners Harbor. Following his retirement, he went to work as a bartender at Jonesy's Tavern in Mariners Harbor, where he became known as "The Pumper" for his habit of adding an extra pump in his patron's cups. Mr. Newcombe served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
"He enjoyed attending family gatherings, barbecues, playing poker with his buddies, attending baseball games and being outdoors," said his son, Alfred Newcombe Jr. "He was very generous with his time and most of all, his heart. He truly was a devoted family man."
Surviving in addition to his son Alfred are his wife of 54 years, the former Florence "Doll" Lipsey; five daughters, Michele Newcombe, Florence Martinez, Rosa Thomas, and Karen and Darline Newcombe; a brother, Lawrence Newcombe; a sister, Barbara Joyner; eight grandchildren and a great-grandson.
