Smith, Alice E.Alice Elaine Smith, 89, of Fond du Lac, passed away on May 1, 2017. She was born on April 6, 1928 to Leo and Rosemary (Dolan) Kelley, and was raised on the Kelley family farm south of Fond du Lac. In 1946, she graduated from St. Mary's Springs Academy. She attended UW-Oshkosh for one year and then worked at a testing laboratory in Fond du Lac.On November 25, 1950 she married Thomas J. Smith at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Fond du Lac. Together they operated a dairy farm east of Eden until Tom's death in 1996. Besides raising her family, she was a member of St. Mary's Church, Eden, was a 4-H leader and for 25 years assisted at the Galloway House until last summer.Alice and Tom were blessed with eight children. She taught them the importance of education, honesty, hard work and laughter. She is survived by seven children: Maureen (Ken) Detmer, Lodi, WI; Catherine (Allan) Smith-Ohm, Onalaska, WI; Patrick (Jill), Seattle, WA; Eileen (Tom) Smith, Columbus, OH; Janet (Ken) Smith-Roche, Boise, ID; Barbara (Mike) Smith-Stanch, North Aurora, IL; Daniel, Madison, WI; and daughter-in-law, Kathleen Smith, Jamestown, NY. She is further survived by twelve grandchildren: Michael, Charles and Ellyn Smith; Joseph and Patrick Detmer and Ann Dunn; Mark and Molly Ohm; Phillip and Tony Roche; and Emily and Julia Stanch; and four great-grandchildren: Tommy and Jack Detmer; Lincoln Smith, and Hailey Detmer.Alice was preceded in death by her husband, Tom, in 1996; son, James, in 1993; two brothers, Leo and Robert Kelley; and a sister, Ruth.Services are as follows: Alice's family will greet relatives and friends on Thursday, May 4, 2017, at Shepherd of the Hills Catholic Church, W1562 County Road B, Eden, from 9:00 to 10:45 AM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated following visitation at the church at 11:00 AM.In lieu of flowers, memorials may be designated to Hospice Home of Hope or Shepherd of the Hills Catholic Church.Zacherl Funeral Home & Crematory is assisting the family.
