MIDLAND - Services for Almaryne R. Thompson, 88, of Odessa will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Sunset Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home with the Rev. Dawn Weeks from First Christian Church Odessa officiating. Almaryne "Alma" R. Thompson died peacefully Saturday, July 29, 2017, at Midland Memorial Hospital surrounded by her family. She will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. She loved the Lord and cared for her family & friends deeply. She was born on August 28, 1928, in Ranger, Texas and grew up in Stephenville, Texas with her brother and extended family. She met her future husband when she was maid of honor at her girlfriend's wedding where she was introduced to the best man, John Thompson. After two weeks of dating, they knew it was meant to be. She married John Wiley Thompson on August 18, 1945 in Mineral Wells, Texas. Alma moved to Odessa in 1945, after marriage to John. They established their home across the street from Odessa High School where they lived for many happy years and had one son, Gary S. Thompson. She loved her family deeply and provided them a happy home. She was a member of First Christian Church of Odessa for 56 years. During that time she led many Christians Women Fellowship spaghetti dinners, was a member of the "Pairs and Spares" Sunday School, and volunteered as a Youth Group leader - the church was their home away from home. She was active in all her son's activities and served as Band Booster volunteer under Bill Dean, while taking many band trips to Corpus Christi with Odessa High School. She had many hobbies, which included: cross-word puzzles, knitting, painting, square dancing, playing bridge, and dominos with her close friends. These hobbies led to membership in the Philresters Club, Allemander Square Dance Club, and Knit Wits. She frequently would be the life of the party after telling many stories on herself. She may have also called you from time to time when she was stumped on the cross-word puzzle of the day. Alma, "Momo", lived to see her family grow from one son, into two grandsons and three great granddaughters. She took pleasure in listening to all three of the men in her life play the trumpet in the band, ensembles, and at church. One of the fondest memories of her from her family will be her cooking, baking, and nights spent on the back porch making homemade ice cream. She made world famous apple & pecan pies, the best hot rolls, as well as a Texas Chocolate sheet cake that she frequently took to church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Mattie Wells Roberts (December 26, 1930 and December 10, 1985, respectively); and her husband, John W. Thompson (March 17, 1999); and her brother Robert Sharlon Roberts who died in North Korea on September 5, 1950. Survivors include her son, Gary S. Thompson and his wife Carol of Midland, Texas; and two grandsons, Matthew A. Thompson, his wife Jennifer as well as their daughters Emma and Olivia of Pearland, Texas; and Gregory S. Thompson, his wife Melissa as well as their daughter Madison of Lubbock, Texas. She is also survived by nephew Robert S. Roberts, wife Kathy and their daughter Amy of San Pedro, California; the Mott family of Stanton, Texas; and many other cousins across the south west. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers that memorials to be given to First Christian Church 601 N. Lee Ave. Odessa, Texas 79761; Door of Hope, 200 W 1st St, Odessa, TX 79761; or, The Somehow Here Again Foundation, 3408 Canyon Rd., Lubbock, Texas 79403. We thank all her care givers and doctors that helped her through the years, especially Dr. Stephanie Kubacak and Dr. John Doran. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.
