Alonzo Thompson Was born Dec 7 1932 in Clarksdale Mississippi to the union of Pearlie May Batton & Armstead Thompson. Alonzo was the 2nd eldest of 8 children. All 7 siblings Charles CW Thompson Jennie mae, Earnest Jackson, JB Thompson, LB Thompson, William Thompson & Frank Thompson whom along with his parents proceeded him in death.
Alonzo was a very talented musically inclined individual who self taught the piano, Bass guitar & harmonica. Alonzo had a zest for life, he loved playing cards, bones, & what they called "shootin Craps" that was Alonzo's main pastime games. After working at South Water Market for many years, Alonzo retired in 1987 to enjoy his favorite hobbies. He was an avid fisherman, talented piano and harmonica player, and enjoyed playing cards with friends and family.
Alonzo had a huge heart & was a very generous, kind hearted man with a good since of humor & a compassion for the world. Alonzo was a great dad but an even better Grandfather to his grandkids. Alonzo discovered he was terminally ill & decided he was gonna fight & not give up even tho his diagnosis was bleak, he chose to continue the battle. Alonzo's days were long & hard & he put up a good long fight but the burden got a little to hard to bare so his will & light was dimmed early Tuesday morning at Cook County hospital. Alonzo passed away peacefully on May 7, 2024 At 12:40 am , in Chicago Lawn, Illinois, at the age of 91.
Alonzo was a loving husband to his wife Diane Vonneedo, whom he married in 1973. Together, they raised 6 wonderful children to whom he leaves to mourn: James Earl (Vanessa Carter), Jeanette, Romara (William Andrews), Anthony Anthony (Vanessa Macklin), Darnella (Tony Montana), & Yolanda (Rufus Lee). 10 Grandkids Vita (Dave Carter) Orlando, James Jr. Beiykiyrah, Tsiyan, Ezra, Miykiyah, Annalise, Nahlej, & Amani Vonneedo
Despite his battle with brain cancer, Alonzo remained upbeat and positive, always cracking jokes and bringing smiles to those around him. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Rest in peace, Alonzo Thompson. Your legacy of love and laughter will live on in our hearts forever.
