She was born on February 6, 1938, in Pittsburgh, PA, to John and Helen Bowen.Alva went to Grove City College where she met Fred Beal - her future husband and love of her life.Alva graduated from Cherry Hill Nursing Program and became a Registered Nurse. Alva's nursing career included private duty, multiple hospitals, Dr. Bradstreet and Dr. Taraschi's office, and Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) - from which she retired in 1999. Alva's love of nursing and wanting to help others showed even in the last weeks of her life. She and Fred lived in Fort Pierce, Florida; Pittsburgh, PA; Winston-Salem, NC; and Columbus, GA before returning to Florida - first Palm Bay, and lastly Satellite Beach. They had close friends everywhere they lived and stayed in touch with them throughout the years. In Fred and Alva's younger years, they traveled all over the country and camped with their two sons. Upon retirement, they traveled and visited the friends they had made. Alva loved being back in Florida- near the ocean, watching college football, and spending time with family and friends. She loved sitting in the driveway with her friends of the Circle (Skyline Circle) and she enjoyed sending cards to friends, when they needed it most.Fred's sudden passing in May 2015, after 57 years of marriage, was especially difficult. Alva did her best, but missed Fred terribly. She longed and looked forward to joining him when her time came.
