Alva V. TorreyWaukeeAlva Vienna Torrey, 77, passed away November 14, 2016 at Iowa Methodist West Hospital. Visitation will be held from 2-3pm, Friday, November 18, 2016 at Iles Westover Chapel. A funeral service will follow, beginning at 3pm. Interment will be at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery, in Van Meter, on November 23, 2016 at 12:30pm.Alva was born on November 5, 1939 in Unionville, Missouri to John and Marga (Hunter) Torrey. He grew up in St. John, MO, and graduated from Unionville High School in 1958. He faithfully served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict. On November 14, 1980, he was united in marriage to Coleen Schultz. In 1988, they moved to Des Moines where they established their own over-the-road trucking business. In the early 1990's, they moved to Waukee where he continued driving for himself and other companies.Alva had a love for the outdoors, whether it was fishing, gardening, mowing the yard, or just walking. His knowledge as a mechanic made him popular with family and neighbors. In his down time inside the house, he enjoyed watching football, NASCAR, old western movies, and country/western music programs. Never meeting a stranger, Alva loved to talk to anybody and everybody.He is survived by his wife, Coleen; daughter, Lisa (Jim) Crow; steps sons, Mark and David Roberts, and David (Cathy) Allie; grandchildren Harper Allie, Shelby and Jesse Crow; numerous great grandchildren; siblings, Fred (Leta) Torrey, Alvera (Jim) Gibson and Bert (Rogene) Torrey, as well as nieces, nephews and their families. He was preceded in death by his parents.
