Alvin H. McCrae, affectionately known as "Shuggs," was born on April 20, 1945, in Sutherland, Virginia, and passed away on September 24, 2024, in Richmond, Virginia. A proud alumnus of Henry Snyder High School, Alvin was an active member of the Tigers marching band, where he showcased his talent as a drummer.
Alvin dedicated 27 years to the construction business, demonstrating his strong work ethic and commitment to his craft before an injury forced him into early retirement. Beyond his professional achievements, he was passionate about coaching little league football, leaving a lasting impact on the lives of many young athletes. His dedication to serving the community in Jersey City was a testament to his character and love for others.
In his personal life, Alvin was a devoted husband to Celestine Mae Tanner (Melvin) and a proud father to seven beautiful children: Tracey, Leah, Maria, Sharonda, Anthony, James, and Alvin Jr. He cherished his role as a grandfather and great-grandfather, with a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren, including his first-ever great-great-grandchild, Zoe Walker, who arrived in 2023.
A lifelong Catholic, Alvin found strength and comfort in his faith, which guided him throughout his life. He is survived by his loving wife and caring children, who will remember him not only for his accomplishments but for the love and joy he brought into their lives. His legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
