Alvin "Al" R. RogersonBarefoot Bay, FLAlvin "Al" Reid Rogerson, 91, loving husband and father, passed away peacefully at home with his family on April 11, 2017. Al was born on August 1, 1925, in Philadelphia, PA, to the late Rebecca (Reba) Reid and Walter Rogerson. On May 16, 1953, at St. James Church in Waverly, NY, Al married the love of his life, Monica Elizabeth Lynch. They went on to raise 7 children in NJ.A World War II Veteran, Al served as a Shipfitter in the US Navy on an AKA (Attack Cargo Auxiliary) ship in the South, Central and Northern Pacific Ocean. He received a BS in Phys Ed from Temple University in 1950, where he was awarded letters in Swimming and Soccer; and an MA in Physical Therapy from NYU in 1956. While attending Temple, he worked as Asst. Athletic Dir. at the Lighthouse Boy's Club in Philadelphia.Al retired from the Newark, NJ, Public School System in 1985, after 20 years teaching Special Ed and Phys Ed as a Registered Physical Therapist (RPT). During this time, he helped organize aquatic events for the Special Olympics and also worked independently as a home care RPT in Woodbridge Township, NJ, for the Board of Health and the Visiting Nurses Association. He went on to form Home Care Physical Therapy, Inc., in 1977, where he served as President, while continuing patient care as an RPT.A natural, all-around athlete, Al's life centered around physical fitness and activity. He started swimming competitively at the age of 8 for the Lighthouse Boy's Club in Philadelphia, continuing as a youth and then for Northeast High School. As an 8th grader, Al placed 3rd in the City of Philadelphia gymnastics competition. After WWII, he swam on the Temple University Team and competed as an AAU (Amateur Athletic Union) diver. During the 1960s and 70s, Al coached and officiated at junior swimming and diving meets for the YMCA, AAU, high schools and colleges. In addition, he coordinated and officiated at Junior Olympics events. Al was true sports enthusiast and a lifetime devout Phillies fan.Al became a singles tennis champion in Middlesex County, NJ, in 1986. In 1987 he and Monica retired to Barefoot Bay, FL, where he resumed competitive swimming until 2005. He coached and placed in numerous events, too many to count, while participating in the Senior Good Life Games, Space Coast Masters, Suncoast Masters and USMS (United States Masters Swimming.)Al was a very caring, honest and hardworking man who loved and provided well for his family. He was a kind humanist, nature enthusiast and showed great respect and compassion for all life. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him.In addition to his wife, Monica, Al is survived by his daughter Ellen Quinlan; grandson Daniel, of Jamesburg, NJ; granddaughter Alison Quinlan of Portland, OR; son David and his wife, Jackelyn, of Anna Maria, FL; daughter Gail Noble, her husband Mark and grandchildren Valerie, Monica and Brian of Howell, NJ; son Eric of Jamesburg, NJ; daughter, Judith Gander and her husband Thomas of Wappingers Falls, NY; son Carl of Jacksonville, FL; sister-in-law, Naomi Rogerson of Philadelphia, PA; daughter-in-law Flor Pena Rogerson of Cusco, Peru; and more than 30 nieces and nephews. Al is predeceased by his brother, Walter, of Philadelphia, PA; his son, Stephen of Woodbridge, NJ and his son-in-law, Dennis Quinlan, of Jamesburg, NJ.A memorial service with military honors will be held on Saturday, May 20, 2:00 PM at Woodland Pond at New Paltz, New Paltz, NY.
