Andrew "Andy" Frank Komensky, 79, formerly of Carlsbad, New Mexico, died Wednesday, March 29, 2017 in St. Louis, Missouri. He was born on September 21, 1937, in Duryea, Pennsylvania, to Andrew and Margaret Komensky. Andy served in the United States Air Force and Reserves from 1956 to 1962 as a member of the Strategic Air Command. After leaving the USAF, Andy worked at Potash Company of America (PCA) and then worked for the United States National Park Service until he retired in 1999. He was a Park Ranger for 13 years at Carlsbad National Park where his bat flight presentation drew rave reviews. Andy also enjoyed two temporary details at the Gateway Arch in St. Louis and at the Grand Canyon National Park. Andy was an avid outdoorsman who loved fishing, archery, bow hunting, mountaineering, and spelunking. He was a lifetime member of the National Speleological Society. This past June, Andy was interviewed by Guano Loco Productions who is currently producing "By Lantern Light: The Jim White Story." Andy was also a gifted artist who excelled in watercolor and acrylic painting, scrimshaw, knife and jewelry making. Over the past several years, despite his limited abilities and with his "puppy" Sammie by his side, Andy spent many hours working on cave themed paintings plus staying connected on Facebook with his family and friends, Andy is survived by his wife, Maureen Fagan, of Saint Louis; his sister Claire Komensky Gromelski; daughter Diane Dorbin; son Richard Dorbin; son Andrew Komensky and spouse Arcangelo Sorvillo; daughter Susan Komensky Hamilton; stepson Barry Nofsinger; grandchildren Aspen Jones, Connor Dorbin, Andrew Dorbin, Nicholas Hamilton, and Owen Sterrs; nieces and nephews Edmund, Jim, and Janice Gromelski; Katie Fagan, Heather Price, Kelly Smith; Chris and Kevin Mueller; brothers and sisters-in-law Janie Muller and Marvin Matthews, Rick and Peggy Placht; and Marlyn Fagan. Andy also leaves behind the greatest friends a man could ever hope for: Peter M. Jones, Linda Stanley Brown, Amanda Joy Brown, Jim and Andrea Goodbar, Peg Stampfer and Bill Barker, Bobby Lee Silliman, Dale Smith, Ron Kerbo, Bobby and Velma Brown, and many friends in Carlsbad, the U.S. National Park Service and the U.S. Geological Society.
