Smiley, Anita Bullock,92, of Louisville, passed away at the Episcopal Church Home on July 8, 2017. She was born on April 7, 1925. Her life-long interest in the theater began at Owensboro Senior High School and continued as a voice and drama major at Virginia Intermont College. Throughout her life, she enjoyed participating in community theater as an actress, producer, and director. She was a co-founder of Anchor Theater and also appeared in plays with Mummers and Minstrels Community Theater and the Little Colonel Playhouse. Later in her life, as a docent at the Speed Art Museum, she took pleasure in telling the stories behind the paintings to museum visitors. She became a member of Meadowview Presbyterian Church in 1954. She sang in the choir, participated in Women of the Church activities, taught Sunday school, and served on a variety of committees. Before that, she was a soprano soloist in the choirs of a number of churches in Louisville. She and her husband were charter members of Hurstbourne Country Club, and she was a Kentucky Colonel. She was predeceased by her husband, William T. Smiley; her parents, Mamie and Thomas Bullock; and her sisters, Nancy Rothinghouse and Alice Nichols.She will be missed by her daughters Ellen Smiley Lewis of Louisville and Susan T. Smiley-Brown (Bradley) of Center Grove, IN; her grandchildren Laura Gallagher (Joshua) of Newnan, GA, and William Smiley-Brown (Robin) of Indianapolis, IN; her step-great-grandson Parker, and five nieces, Cecy Thompson, Laurie Rothinghouse, Martha Osborn, Nancy Ferguson, and Judy Schroeder.The family wishes to express their gratitude to April Moore, who took care of "Miss Anita" for five years, and to Dr. Jane Cornett, nurse Amy Deacon, and the rest of the staff of the Episcopal Church Home who took good care of her. A memorial service will be Thursday, July 13, at 2:00 at St. Luke's Chapel at the Episcopal Church Home, 7504 Westport Road, Louisville, KY 40222. Visitation will be at 1:00 prior to the service. A private burial service will be held in Cave Hill Cemetery. Memorial gifts may be made to the Kentucky Humane Society, Meadowview Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund, or the Scholarship Fund of the Episcopal Church Home.
