This obituary is administered by:
Annice Smith passed away on October 10, 2010 at the age of 96 ½, after spending her entire life in the Kittitas Valley. She was content to marry, raise a family and retire within a few miles of where she was born on April 8, 1914.She is survived by her daughter Gayle Ann Hardin and 3 sons and their wives; Guy and Joy Smith; Gene and Peggy Smith; Jerry and Barbara Smith. She has 13 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild. Also surviving is Annice's youngest brother Dean Ross who resides in the valley, and 4 nieces and nephews.Annice was preceded in death by her husband Guy in 1976, her sister Deltah Ross Dean, two brothers William and Paul, her half-brother George Ross, and grandson Shannon Smith.Annice was born on her parent's farm near Thrall and started school in the one-room Cove school house near her parent's main farm on the Hanson Road in the Manastash area. She went through the 8th grade there; finishing High School in Thorp in 1932. She married Guy W. Smith in 1936 and in 1943 they bought a house on East 8th Ave. For 65 years, Annice lived in that house until she moved to Royal Vista in June 2008 and then to Inglewood Arbor House in Yakima in late 2008. Annice was always enthusiastic when telling about her upbringing on the farm and about her ancestral history. Her father's older siblings came to the valley from Missouri in 1883 and his sister Emma married Jacob Rego whose parents were early valley pioneers and whose descendents still live there. Annice's half-brother George Ross has many descendents in the valley, and one grandchild, Mary Ross Page, resides in the old Ross farm house on Hanson road, 103 years after it was purchased from Olof Hanson in 1907.When hearing her childhood stories, it was evident that she was a devoted daughter; helping her dad in the fields, learning to drive her own team of horses, holding the twitch while he re-shoed them, putting a fresh coat of paint in her mother's kitchen. The family saw that work ethic carry over to their mother's life in all that she did; as well as the softness of a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.Annice was very close to her husband Guy's five sisters and their families with whom she shared a strong religious faith. Guy's family can be traced back to the early 1880's in Washington Territory, where his grandparents wheat farmed and ranched in Walla Walla Co.Annice's survivors retain fond memories of the many good times enjoyed together over the years with the extended family in the valley; fishing the creeks and roadside ditches, hunting in the fields and hills, picnicking in the Manastash, Taneum, and Swauk campgrounds, sledding off the machine shed roof in big snow years, rodeo time, and holidays at grandpa and grandma's.The family cannot say enough about how Annice's dear daughter Gayle was devoted to her mother. Through hard work, dedication, and love, Gayle kept her mother comfortable in her own home for many years longer than thought possible, and for another 2 years after Annice moved to assisted living. Gayle's brothers, their families, and all who loved Annice will forever be grateful to Gayle for her selfless, courageous acts of love.Funeral services will be held at 11 AM on Saturday October 16, 2010. They will be at the Kittitas County Fair Grounds, Annice's beloved neighborhood for 65 years, and will be in the Western Village Dance Hall located at the east end of 8th Avenue. Graveside services will follow at the IOOF Cemetery where Annice will be laid to rest next to her husband Guy; with mother, father, grandmother, brothers and nephews not far away.Suggestions for remembrances are: Yakima Memorial Hospice, the , and the Parkinson's Disease Foundation. The family wants to thank the staff at Inglewood Arbor House in Yakima for their loving care of Annice for the last 2 years. Also, the family wants to thank Dr. Marilynn Carr, Dr. Wendy Owens, and Nurse Michelle at Valley Clinic for their many years of excellent care.
