ANTHONY J. KAPITAN "TONY" WHITING, IN Anthony J. "Tony" Kapitan, 78 of Whiting, passed away Saturday, December 10, 2016 at St. Anthony Hospital, Crown Point. He was the beloved son of the late Rudolph and Johanna Kapitan; loving brother of Mary (late George) Germek and Tillie (Ray) Bryan both of Crown Point, Ambrose (Pat) Kapitan of Dyer and Joseph (Eleanor) Kapitan of Highland; sister-in-law, Mary Kapitan of Crown Point; cherished uncle of many nieces, nephew, great nieces and nephews and great, great nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, John and Rudolph Kapitan and sister-in-law, Mary Kapitan. Visitation will be held on Wednesday morning, December 14, 2016 from 10:00-11:30AM at the St. Anthony Chapel, 203 Franciscan Drive, Crown Point, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30AM with the Rev. Michael Slatterty, OSA, officiating; interment to follow at St. John Cemetery, Hammond. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Baran Funeral Home, 1235-119th St., Whiting. Tony Kapitan was born on July 28, 1938 and was a lifelong resident of Whiting. He was a graduate of Whiting High School, Class of 1956 and was a US Army Veteran. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Whiting, the First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association, BR. 81 and the Knights of Columbus, Pope John XXIII Council, 1696. He was a retiree of the Inland Steel Company, East Chicago with a service of 38 years.
