APRIL COLLETTE MAINOR Obituary

Jan 01, 1950 - Jun 05, 2023

This obituary is administered by:

A life well lived.

April Collette Mainor was born on June 27, 1961, to her mother, Grace Hill, and father, George Hill Sr., in Cincinnati, Ohio. Her parents raised her with her 11 brothers and sisters: Mertha, Deloris, Jen, Brenda, Jacqueline, George, Victor, Greg, Herald, Derald D, and Gerald.

On May 15, 2023, God decided that he needed April, so she passed without warning. April's sudden death has left all her family, friends, and all those who had the blessing of knowing her in mourning, but through her kindred heart and spirit, she will continue to live and be celebrated.

April graduated from Aiken High School in Cincinnati, Ohio, class of 1980. She lived a full life surrounded by her family and friends.

She married Thomas Mainor Sr. and raised their five children in Atlanta, Georgia.

April often volunteered with her local community outreach programs and loved giving the neighborhood kids treats. You would usually see them knocking on her door politely, asking for treats and snacks.

April held many professions and was a jack of all trades. She lived by her strong spirit, always telling her children that there is nothing that you can't do. From working in public service with the Department of Corrections to fueling jets for Delta, she was always determined to show that there wasn't anything that a man could do that she couldn't do, and she could do it better!!!

More than anything, April loved her family and her children. She stressed the importance of family, education, reading, and free-thinking and taught them to "question everything.". April also firmly believed in her people, culture, and history. Pictures of Malcolm X, Martin Luther King Jr., and Nelson Mandela hung on the walls of her home, as she always wanted her children to know their culture and understand their history. Movies such as Mandela, X, and The Color Purple were always on repeat in her home. She talked to her children about the beauty of our people and culture and wanted them to be proud of who they are. "Walk with your head high," she would always say. "Don't mumble your words…" "Speak like you've got something to say." These are examples of some of the messages she sent to her children, as she wanted them to walk with pride and be fearless!!!

April touched everybody's lives and was a ball of energy and love that left a lasting impression on everyone she encountered.

April was preceded in death by her mother, Grace Hill; her father, George Hill Sr.; and her sisters, Jacqueline Bostic and Deloris Biggs.

April is survived after her death by her children: Thomas Mainor Jr. (Brenda Mainor), Chelsea Mainor, Johnathan Mainor (April Walker-Mainor), Thomias Mainor (Delicia Mainor), and Nadia Smith (Fred Smith).

April is survived by her sisters Mertha Ann Thornton (Billie Thornton), Jen Anderson, Brenda Hightower-Hill (Johnnie Hightower), and her brothers George Hill (Deborah Hill), Victor Hill, Gregory Hill (Teressa Hill), Herald Hill, Gerald Hill (Peggy Hill), and Derald D. Hill. She is also survived by her life partner, Henry Goins.

She is also loved and adored by her grandchildren, cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, great-great nieces and nephews, and friends.

On behalf of the children, special thanks to her life partner, Henry Goins, and daughters-in-laws, Brenda Mainor & April Walker-Mainor, as well as all of the many friends and family, for their support in helping to celebrate our mother's life. We love you all!
