A heart of gold stopped beating, two willing hands at rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us, He only takes the best…Our loving father, husband, and grandfather, Ashley J. Cook Jr., of Ulster, Pa., passed away on Sunday, Dec. 11, 2016. Ashley was born on Aug. 20, 1943 in Sayre, Pa., the son of Ashley and Catherine Cook of Towanda, Pa. He attended St. Agnes School until 11th grade when he transferred to Towanda High School to pursue his love of track and field activities, in which he excelled. He often reminded friends and family that he was once a state competitor in track and field with numerous records at Towanda High School during his time there, before graduating in 1962. Following graduation, Ashley went on to join the United States Army. While in the Army, he toured in Germany during the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged from the Army in 1965.He was an electrician for GTE in Towanda, Pa., for many years, before retiring due to disability in 1988. Ashley was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt and fish. He was a dominant force on the pool table in numerous locations around Bradford County. When not playing pool at the local VFW, he'd find enjoyment in taking his friends' money in a friendly game of pitch. He also bowled for many years in the Thursday Night League at Shamrock Lanes in Ulster. Despite his many hobbies, nothing compared to his love for Monday nights when he could watch his favorite TV show, WWE Monday Night Raw. Ashley will be greatly missed by his loving wife of 38 years, Cathy Cook; his children, Cory Cook, Sandra and her husband Scott Fuhrey, and Kay and her husband Jeffrey Doerner; his grandchildren, Ryan Carr, Christian and wife Marcy Carr, Jessica Carr, Caitlyn Doerner, and Morgan Doerner; and his great-grandson, Wesley Carr.He is also survived by his brother, Bill Cook and family of Waverly, N.Y.; sister, Joan and husband Ed Gilroy and family of Marlboro, Mass.; his two brothers-in-law, John Adams Jr. of Ulster and William Adams of Monroeton. Ashley was predeceased by his parents; his sister and brother-in-law, Gene and Joe Pribula; and his mother- and father-in-law, Joyce and John Adams.Family and friends are invited to attend a period of visitation and time of sharing memories from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 14, at the Maryott-Bowen Funeral Home on York Avenue in Towanda, Pa. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 15, followed by full military honors at the Bradford County Memorial Park. The family will provide flowers.
