Balbina G. Quintana, 100, passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2015, in Las Vegas.She was born on March 29, 1915, to Andres Gutierrez and Aurelia Garcia Gutierrez in Trujillo.She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Jose Manuel Quintana; daughter: Carmen Hicks; grandson: Jacobie Quintana; granddaughter raised as a daughter: Lynda Quintana; her siblings: Josie Gurule, Mary Lucero, Sarah Baca, Samuel Gutierrez, Reyes Gutierrez, Adela Gallegos, Antonio Gutierrez, Gerbasio Gutierrez and Manuel Gutierrez; sisters and brothers-in-law: Adelaida Gonzales, Abelina Lucero, Lupe Lucero, Frances Wildenstein, Lourdes Ulibarri, Juan Quintana, Liberato Quintana, Elijio Quintana, Bernardo Quintana and Dolores Lopez.She is survived by her son: Joe M. Quintana Jr. and Sally of Las Vegas; grandson: Joe M. Quintana III and Mary Jo of Los Lunas; granddaughter: Twila Quintana and Cindy Armijo of Las Vegas; great-granddaughter: Brittany Quintana; great-grandson: Dylan Quintana; sisters-in-law: Mary Quintana and Mary Lala Quintana, both of Denver; brother-in-law: Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Molina of Cuba, N.M.; special friends: Charles and Louise Martinez, Emma Estrada and Viola Martinez; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, friends and former students.Balbina married Jose at the Catholic church in Alamitos in 1939. The two spent more than 60 years together at their ranch in Garita.Balbina was an educator and valued education. She graduated from Santa Fe's Allison James School for Girls in 1934. She received a bachelor's degree in education from Highlands University. She completed a master's degree in educational administration in 1963. Balbina retired from the West Las Vegas School District after teaching for more than 42 years. She was the last living teacher who taught at the Trementina School.Many of her former students kept in touch with her, from all over the world, decades after they graduated. She loved to work on her garden, bake bread and cookies, spend time with family and tell stories from her past. Balbina was an avid reader and enjoyed music and singing. She also volunteered her time with 4-H, NEA and at her church as a mayordomo. Rosary services will be held at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Las Vegas. Funeral services will be conducted at 9 a.m. on Wednesday at Our Lady of Sorrows Church, with Father Douglas Mitchell as celebrant. Interment will follow at Sagrada Familia Cemetery in Variadero. Casket bearers are: Joe M. Quintana III, Mike Garcia, Abel Lucero, Marvin Martinez, Joe Sisneros and Warren Wildenstein.
