Mrs. Smith, 74, entered the gates of Heaven on February 1, 2017, after a long battle with Alzheimer's Disease. She was surrounded by family and friends at the time of her death. She was born on November 25, 1942 to the late Harvey and Alma Deason. She was a loving wife, mother, sister and grandmother. After graduating from University of South Carolina, Barbara married Jerry Smith. She worked as a CPA for many years. She retired from John Eagle & Associates in Charlotte where she was a partner. She also did the accounting for Smith Brothers Farm in Stallings. Barbara was a good and faithful servant to God. She was a member of Stallings United Methodist Church for over 50 years. From leading the United Methodist Women, to serving as lay leader, Barbara was very active and enjoyed being a part of her church family. Surviving are her sons, Benjie (Kim) Smith of Matthews and Brian (Stephanie) Smith of Monroe. She was blessed with 5 grandchildren William and Rivers, Callie, Emma and Jacob. Barbara is also survived by her loving siblings; sister, Elaine (Ted) Kiker of Matthews; brothers, James (Betty) Deason of Huntersville and Lynn Deason of Wingate; brother-in-law Bobby Hartis of Wesley Chapel. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry Smith, her parents and her sister, Patricia Deason Hartis. The family would like to thank her loyal friends Kay Wilburn and Janice Parks for being by her side throughout the extent of her illness. She loved them both dearly. We also would like to extend our appreciation to the Jesse Helms Center in Monroe for the incredible care they provided to Barbara during her brief stay. The family will receive friends tonight 6-8PM at Heritage Funeral Home, Weddington Chapel. Her funeral will be held at 11AM on Saturday, February 4, 2017 at Stallings United Methodist Church with burial to follow at Forest Lawn East Cemetery.In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a donation in Barbara's memory to either Stallings UMC, 1115 Stallings Rd, Matthews, NC 28104 or to the to support research, 4600 Park Road, Suite 250, Charlotte, NC 28209.
