Barbara E. SchmidtBarbara E. Schmidt, formerly of Lafayette, IN (and recently of West Bloomfield, MI) passed away peacefully in her sleep in the early morning of June 1, 2017, at the age of 98. Friendly, thoughtful, a marvelous cook, and much loved by her family, who were all preparing to celebrate her 99th birthday on June 4, three days later. Barbara is survived by her son David (Kelly) Schmidt of Monument, CO, her daughter Ellen Georgene Poglits of West Bloomfield, seven grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.Barbara was born June 4, 1918, to Manson and Mabel (Kingery) Lipp in Clinton County IN, and was raised on their farm near Sedalia. She graduated from Rossville High School, and completed schooling to become a licensed beautician. She then worked in that profession for several years in Lafayette, IN, where she married E. Lynn Gray of Fargo, ND, on October 18, 1941. Their son David "Kelly" was born in 1943. Mr. Gray was killed in action in WWII in Normandy France in 1944, and on February 14, 1949, Barbara married Herbert R. Schmidt of Lafayette. Their daughter Ellen was born one year later. Barbara, Herbert and their family lived in Lafayette many years, and were longstanding members of St. Boniface parish there. In 1998 Barbara and Herbert moved to an assisted living facility in Kokomo, IN, and then later to a facility in Michigan to be nearer Ellen and her family. Herbert preceded Barbara in death in 2009.A celebration of Barbara's life and a funeral mass for Barbara and Herbert will be held at St Boniface in Lafayette, IN on Saturday August 5, 2017.
