Barbara N. (Savage) Heifner RN, MAN, 85Alexandria - Barbara N. (Savage) Heifner RN, MAN, 85, Alexandria passed away at her residence on Thursday, February 23, 2017.She was born on March 20, 1931 in Boone Township, Madison County to William Lemuel and Blanche Faye (Merrill) Savage and has lived in this area all of her lifetime. Barbara was a graduate of Alexandria High School-Class of 1948. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from Ball State University in 1952. From 1952 to 1960 she worked as a charge nurse at St. John's Hospital in Anderson. From 1960 to 1964, Barbara was an office nurse for Dr. Richard Shafer in Alexandria. From 1964-1966 Barbara was a staff nurse at Community Hospital-Anderson. From 1967-1972 she was a Med-Surg Instructor at Holy Cross School of Nursing in Anderson. From 1972-1975 Barbara was an in-service educator at St. John's Hospital. She earned her Master of Arts in Nursing from Ball State University in 1976 and a Master of Art in gerontology in 1990 from Ball State as well. From 1975 to 1978 she was an instructor in the Ball State University School of Nursing and then became an Assistant Professor in the School of Nursing until her retirement in 1993.She held Certifications from the American Nurses Association of Gerontological Nursing Practice and as a Diabetes Educator. Barbara held memberships in numerous professional organizations including the Indiana State Nurses Association and Beta Rho, Sigma Theta Tau. She volunteered for the American Red Cross, the Madison County 4-H Club, the American Diabetes Association and the Neurofibromatosis Chapter of Indiana. She was a member of the Profit and Pleasure Club of Madison County Homemakers, Red Bud Quilters Guild, Evening Star Quilters Guild, previous board member of the Indiana State Quilters Guild and was president of Madison County Extension Homemakers from 2009-2011. She was named Alexandria 2002 Woman of the Year.Barbara is lovingly remembered for her lifelong giving of love to others and she is honored by her four sons, Steven Heifner of Melbourne, Fla., Kenneth (Sarah) Heifner of Alexandria, Mark (Rhonda) Heifner of Angola, and Jeff Heifner of Alexandria. She is survived by 16 grandchildren: Anna (Brian) Elliot of Martinsville, Angie Heifner of Indianapolis, Adriel (Bill) Pike of Shelbyville, Amber (Brandon) Aiman, Aaron (Mary Ann) Heifner of Alexandria, Andrew (Lindsay) Heifner of Tarpon Springs, Fla., Susie Lindell of Noblesville, Nathaniel Heifner of Newburgh, Chris Heifner, Lance (Natalie Price) Heifner, Shana (Mitch) Walter, Caleb (Kristin Plummer) Heifner, Kaylee Heifner, Carter Heifner, Ella Heifner and Joseph John Heifner all of Angola. Barbara has 22 Great-Grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, husband-John Heifner in 2013, and sisters-Martha (Bill) Harmon and Lenora (Max) Stone.Services celebrating Barbara's legacy and faith will take place at 5 p.m. on Sunday, February 26, 2017 in the Christian Congregation Church, 11015 North 300 East, Alexandria. Pastor Jerry Young will officiate. Cremation will follow the services and ashes interred at a later date near the grave sites of her parents and husband at the IOOF Cemetery in Alexandria. Friends may call on the family at the Christian Congregation Church on Sunday after 3 pm prior to the services. The Madison County Nursing Honor Guard will stand in honor beginning at 4:45 pm and then will open the services with their ceremony at 5 pm.Memorial contributions are suggested to the Christian Congregation Church and can be made through the Owens Funeral Home in Alexandria with envelopes available at the services.Online condolences:
