Rusch, Barbara Rae SchuchardtBarbara Rae Schuchardt Rusch of the Woodlands at Furman, widow of Richard A. Rusch, 1247 Trailhead Court, Greenville, S.C. died on September 12, 2017. She was born on November 29, 1935, in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, the daughter of the late Raymond E. and Martha Clement Schuchardt.Barbara graduated from Sheboygan Central High School in 1953 and received a B. A. degree from the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee in 1957. She married Richard A. Rusch on August 10, 1957. She worked as an elementary school teacher in Texas and Wisconsin before staying home as a full-time homemaker to care for her family.Survivors include her son, Robert (Bernie), daughter Lori Nelson (Bryan), grandchildren Chantal Lucas (Jacob), Spencer Nelson and Bailey Nelson, and great-grandchildren Jacob Lucas, Jr and Rilya Lucas. She is also survived by a sister, Joyce Conrardy of Sheboygan, Wisconsin, a brother, Ronald Schuchardt of Golden, Colorado, two nieces and many, many friends. Barb was an active volunteer with the American Cancer Society in Wisconsin and received several awards for her volunteer service: the Terese Lasser Award for outstanding service to the Reach to Recovery program in 1992 and the Saint George Medal for distinguished service in cancer control in 1995 for her work with the Cancer Response System, a forerunner pilot program for the ACS 800 number. She was an advocate for
breast cancer education and supported the Relay for Life for many years as a team captain and survivor in Wisconsin, North and South Carolina.Music was always one of Barb's passions. Throughout her life, she was a member of various church choirs and during retirement in Flat Rock, N.C. was a charter member of the Kenmure Show Chorus.Travel was another love and Barb traveled to over 60 countries around the world.After moving to the Woodlands, Barb became involved in the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at Furman where she indulged her interests in literature, music, learning new things, volunteering, and playing Mah Jongg.A memorial service will be held September 16, 2017, at 2:00 p.m.at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 7 Shannon Dr., Greenville, SC, with a visitation preceding the service at 1:00 p.m. A reception will follow the service at the Woodlands at Furman from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bridges to a Brighter Future, a Furman University program that Barb and Rick supported.
