Hanks, Barbara Sue Gardner Hayes,76, of Louisville, passed away on Tuesday, September 12, 2017 at Hosparus Inpatient Care Center where she lost her 19 year battle with
breast cancer. Barbara was born on June 24, 1941. She graduated from Presentation Academy in 1959, earned a Bachelor of Science in Education from Nazareth College in 1963, earned a Master of Education from Catherine Spalding College in 1968. Barbara was married on June 24, 1981 to Thomas R. Hanks in Las Vegas, Nevada. She retired from JCPS where she was a second grade teacher at Blake Elementary. During retirement, she enjoyed traveling, reading, playing slot machines, and watching Wheel of Fortune.Barbara was preceded in death by her mother, Marie A. Gardner in 2010 and her father, Delbert F. Gardner in 1981.Barbara is survived by her husband, Thomas R. Hanks; daughter Cherie Hayes Kaufman (Wayne); stepdaughters, Debra Hanks Mundt, Linda Hanks Morton, Dianne Hanks and Laura Hanks Miller; grandchildren, Scott and Shawn Kaufman; step grandchildren, Gregory, Christopher, and Justin Mundt, Kassie and Garrett Miller, Zachary and Danielle Morton, and Tereck Hanks; and one step great-grandson, Ayden Thomas. She is also survived by her brother, Jim Gardner (Betty Ann Rothman); nephew, Chris Gardner (Trish); two nieces, Robynne Gardner Middleton (Tony) and Jennifer Gardner; as well as one great niece, Tori Gardner, and one great nephew, Tyler Gardner.Visitation will be from 2-8pm Friday, September 15th at Arch L. Heady at Resthaven, 4400 Bardstown Road. The funeral service will take place at 12pm Saturday at the funeral home, with entombment to follow at Resthaven Memorial Park.
