Barksdale CroslandRidgelandBarksdale Johnston Crosland passed away at the age of 86 on March 30, 2017. "Barkie" was born on February 26, 1931 to Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Edmund Johnston Sr. A Jackson native, she taught first grade at Jackson Academy for over 25 years. She was a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church of Jackson where she taught Sunday school, served on various committees, and was honored with the Women's Ministry Lifetime Membership award. She was educated in Jackson Public Schools and graduated from Central High School in 1949. She attended Mississippi State College for Women (now MUW) and went on to graduate from Millsaps College where she was a member of Chi Omega sorority. Her first teaching job was in Atlanta, Georgia where she met her husband Robert M. Crosland, Jr. of Charlotte, North Carolina. They moved back to Jackson where she continued her teaching career. She was also a member of the Jackson Junior League. In her retirement, she enjoyed reading, working in her yard, and spending time with her grandchildren. Barkie was preceded in death by her husband, Robert M. Crosland, Jr., parents Margaret Craig Johnston and Joseph Edmund Johnston Sr., and her brother Joseph Edmund Johnston Jr. She is survived by her son Bobby Crosland (Angie) of Starkville, her son Dr. Craig Crosland (Julie) of Madison, and her daughter Emily Dixon (Richard) of Madison. She was the proud grandmother of Bobby, Tyler, and Logan Crosland, Pearce and Claire Crosland, and Clay, Brad, and Ginger Dixon. She also had four great-grandchildren.Visitation will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Jackson on Monday, April 3 at 9:30 a.m. with a service following at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be at Glenwood Cemetery in Yazoo City at 2:30 p.m.The family requests that memorials be made to First Presbyterian Church, French Camp Academy, or Gateway Rescue Mission.
