Basil Lyon, 97, Loretto, passed away Saturday, Feb. 4, 2017 at his residence.He was born on July 2, 1919 in Loretto. He and his family operated the old "Lyon's General Store". He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army and a member of Saint Francis of Assisi Catholic Church.He was preceded in death by: his wife, Emma Lee Lyon; his parents, Joseph Herbert and Mabel Elizabeth Cambron Lyon; two sisters, Grace Mattingly and Eunice Bowling; and three brothers, Henry Lyon, Rev. George Lyon OSB, and Bro. Brian Lyon CSC.Survivors include: two daughters, Sally Hancock (Terry) of Lebanon and Alice Lyon (Mary O'Doherty) of Louisville; two grandsons, Casey Hancock and Terry Wayne Hancock Jr.; five great-grandchildren; one sister, Hazel Miles of Louisville; two brothers, Raphael Lyon (Betty) and Rev. Joseph A. "Doc" Lyon, all of Louisville; and a number of nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 7, at Saint Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, Loretto, with burial in the church cemetery where military rites will be conducted by the Marion County Veterans Honor Guard. Rev. Bryan Lamberson will preside. Visitation is 3-9 p.m. Monday, Feb. 6, at Mattingly Funeral Home, 195 Holy Cross Road, Loretto.In lieu of flowers, memorials may go toward the Saint Francis of Assisi Cemetery, c/o Saint Francis of Assisi Church, P.O. Box 74, Loretto, KY 40037.Pallbearers are his grandsons and Bill Lyon, Jodie Lyon, Mike Stevens, and Phil Medley.Mattingly Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
