Ben A. RainsbergerCHILLICOTHE: After a brief fight with cancer, Ben A. Rainsberger of Chillicothe, Ohio passed away at home surrounded by family and friends on December 21, 2016 at the age of 60. Ben was born on August 20, 1956 in Urbana, Ohio, and raised in a Methodist Parsonage with his two brothers and one sister. Ben graduated from Madison-Plains High School in 1974 and attended Otterbein College, graduating in 1978 with a Bachelor's in History/Political Science. Ben obtained his Juris Doctor from The Ohio State University in 1981 and passed his bar exam in the same year.While living in Mt. Sterling Ben served on Mt. Sterling City Council. Ben enjoyed throwing darts, playing bridge, traveling, genealogy and spending time with family and friends. Ben loved to hear a good story and loved to tell one even more; this was evident when he was hanging out with his Thursday night group of friends affection ally labeled "The Liars Club." Ben was a fixture of the Chillicothe Downtown and until his retirement from the Ohio State Public Defenders Office on September 1, 2016, could be seen strolling to and from court or eating his lunch at the Crosskeys Tavern. Ben leaves behind his mother, Irene Rainsberger, brother and sister-in-law, Paul and Susan (Koenig) Rainsberger, his sister and brother-in-law, Doris and Brian Stritenberger, and sister-in-law Mary Lou Rainsberger. Two sons, Dustin Rainsberger and Seth Rainsberger. Two grandchildren, Kiara Rainsberger and Jordan Rainsberger. His long-time companion, Kathy Smith, her daughter, Allie Smith and grandson, Zaiden Grubb. Ben also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Proceeding Ben in death are his father, the Reverend Lynn Rainsberger and brother Ray Rainsberger.During his short illness, Ben was taken care of by family and the wonderful staff of Heartland Hospice. At Ben's request his body was placed in the care of the Boonshoft School of Medicine (Wright State University) so he could continue to teach and tell stories after his passing. A Memorial Service will be held on January 7, 2017 at 3pm at First Presbyterian Church, 13 Mead Drive, Chillicothe, Ohio with a Celebration of Life immediately after at the 17 East-Crosskeys Tavern, 19 East Main Street, Chillicothe, Ohio. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Southern Ohio Survivors, 33 ½ South Paint Street, Chillicothe, Ohio 45601.
