Bernard "Beansie" UpdikeAGE: 85 • HazletBernard Updike, fondly known as "Beansie", 85, of Hazlet, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 13, 2017 at Bayshore Medical Center in Holmdel, New Jersey. Bernard was born on April 6,1932 in Jersey City, New Jersey, before moving to Bayonne, New Jersey. He was a Navy veteran serving in 1951 aboard the USS English Destroyer, the USS Midway and the USS Entrepid during the Korean War. During his years in Bayonne, Bernard was employed by IMTT Tank Terminal. Bernard was known as "Beansie" as he bartended at Sullys Bar in Jersey City for 18 years. Bernie and "Judy" then moved to Hazlet where "Bernie" as he was known to the children, was a crossing guard at the Middle Road School in Hazlet. He was a big supporter of the American Legion and the VFW and a member of the democratic club. He was predeceased by his parents, Harry and Veronica (Brennan) Updike, his brother -in-laws, Thomas Lavan, Eugene Lavan and Michael Lavan. Bernie is survived by his devoted wife, Julia "Judy" Lavan-Updike of Hazlet, New Jersey, his dear sister, Judith Razzoli, and his nephews, Paul, Kevin, Mark and Michael, his brother-in-laws and sister-in-law, Jack Lavan, Noreen Haveron, Brian Lavan, James Mark Lavan and Kevin Lavan. He is also survived by many cherished nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews as well as a host of extended family members. Bernie will be deeply missed, but never forgotten. Family and friends are invited to visit on Monday, May 15, 2017 from 4:00 to 8:00 PM and Tuesday morning, May 16, 2017 from 8:30 AM to 9:15 AM at the Shore Point Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 3269 State Highway/Route 35 North, Hazlet, New Jersey 07730. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Tuesday morning, May 16, 2017 at 10:00 AM at Holy Family Church in Union Beach. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery in North Arlington.
