Bernice "Bea" M. Callahan, 86, of Austin, died Sunday, Oct. 23, 2016, at Mayo Clinic Health System Austin. Bernice was born on the family farm near Otranto, Iowa, on Aug. 8, 1930, the daughter of Gustave and Mary (Schroeder) Stelter. She graduated from St. Ansgar High School in 1948. On Aug. 22, 1948, Bea married Johnny Callahan at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Toeterville, Iowa, and to this union two sons, Larry and Gary, were born. Bea was a very active member of Crane Community Chapel. She loved to go to church and help do what ever needed to be done. She taught Sunday school, preschool and was in charge of serving the meals for funerals and weddings for many years. She enjoyed bowling, playing cards, making yarn hangers and listening to country music. She also loved watching Iowa sports teams. She looked forward to going out to coffee with the girls. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Johnny, brother and sister-in-law, Lawrence and Gala Stelter, and sister and brother-in-law, Lucille and Brad Larson; sister-in-law and brothers-in-law, Marge and Darrel Deets and Jack Davison. Bea is survived by her sons, Larry Callahan, Austin, and Gary Callahan, Austin; sister-in-law, Nada Davison, Nora Springs, Iowa; special daughter, Cindy Jensen, Austin; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 28, at Crane Community Chapel, with the Rev. Dale Christiansen officiating. Interment will be at Toeterville Cemetery in Toeterville. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary and one hour before the service Friday at the church.
