Bernice Slaton, 39, of Merced, quietly left her earthly home on May 15, 2018, leaving a wonderful legacy of uncommon grace and love. "When you look good, you feel better," was her mantra. But Bernice's love of beauty was not superficial. All who knew her felt her positive aura and her soft touch.
Born January 9, 1979, one of six children of Nazira Sherman and Samuel "Sam" Sherman in Merced, California, Bernice spent a happy childhood with three sisters and two brothers in that small close-knit community. After graduating from Shaw High School, Bernice attended Merced college, where she then started a family of her own. In August of 1998, when Bernice married the love of her life, Joseph "Joe" Slaton of Merced, two families were made one. Bernice and Joe built a home, reared their three children and became active in the Merced community. They remained devoted to St Joseph's Catholic Church throughout their lives.
Bernice not only excelled as a talented hostess and homemaker, but she also worked outside her home in several positions. During her last few years, Bernice was confined to a wheelchair. Despite her numerous limitations and health issues she never complained, always carrying herself with dignity.
Bernice was predeceased by her parents, Nazira and Sam Sherman; brother, Dr. Emmett Sherman; sister, Louise Rossie Ferriss; and sister Jamie Anne Ward.
