BETTY GATES, 83 WARREN - Betty Gates, 83, of Warren, Illinois, passed away Monday, April 28, 2014, after a four-year battle with cancer. Betty was born on October 8, 1930, at home in Rawlins township near Galena, the daughter of Harry and Neva (Schuler) Hartwig, Sr. After attending school for twelve years, she graduated from Galena High School in 1948. She worked in the office at the Savannah Ordnance Depot for two years following graduation. On January 8, 1949, she married Wayne Austin Gates, of Rush Township near Warren, and they began farming. Betty enjoyed working with their dairy herd and large tree farm, baking ginger cookies for her grandchildren, and embroidery work. She traveled to all 50 states, as well as Europe, Canada and Mexico. Surviving are her husband, Wayne; their three children, Robert (Judy) Gates of Warren, Linda (Robert) Sharpe of Springfield, Illinois, and Roger (Rebecca) Gates of Decatur, Illinois; sister, Jean Muchow; sister-in-law, Mary Jo Hartwig; ten grandchildren, Jennifer (Adam) Pierce, Heather (David) Dubose, Rebecca (Brett) Anderson, Brian (Jennifer) Gates, Lee (Amanda) Sharpe, Dr. Gary (Anjuli) Sharpe, Roger (Rachel) Sharpe, Logan (Sarah) Gates, Curtis Gates and Anna Gates; four great-grandchildren; and her best friend of 77 years, Bette Oldenburg Lewin. Four brothers and one sister preceded Betty in death, William, Harry, Jr., George, John, and Dorothy Rietz. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, May 2, 2014, at the Bartell Leamon Funeral Home. Betty was a member of Warren United Methodist Church, where the funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday. She will be interred at Elmwood Cemetery. Immediately following interment, lunch will be at served at the church. Donations in memory of Betty may be given to the Warren United Methodist Church.
