Betty "Joan" Gross, passed away at 9:10 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 2, 2017, at her home, surrounded by her family.She was born on Dec. 30, 1930, in Bloomington to the late Merle and F. Naomi (Hedrick) Sanders, in the home of her maternal grandparents. On Aug. 15, 1959, at the Monticello Christian Church, she married Charles E. Gross; he passed away on Jan. 20, 2003. They were married for more than 42 years. Joan and her parents moved to Monticello in 1936.She owned and operated Joan's Beauty Shop for more than 20 years and worked as a social worker for White County Welfare Office for several years.She was a member of the Monticello Christian Church for over 80 years. Joan was also active in the church choir and CWF (Christian Women Fellowship).She was involved in Special Olympics for decades.Joan loved being with family and friends, especially with her grandchildren.She had a golden heart with a warm, infectious smile. Everyone loved being around her.She is survived by her sons, Todd Gross, Monticello, and Ted (Karen) Gross, Dyer; step-children, Bruce Gross, West Palm Beach, Fla., Charlene (Ron) Goldstein, Flagstaff, Ariz.; grandchildren, Scott Gross, Kristen (Lavera) Gross, Brock, Haley, and Bryce Gross; step-grandchildren, Tony (Cassie) Barnhardt, Jason KC, and Nathan Goldstein; step-great-grandchildren, Tristen, Gavin, Skylar, Marah, Lily, and Cruz; foster brother, Bob Lawrence, Florida; and special cousins, Linda McDaniel, Colorado and Jerry Sanders, whom her parents raised of Alabama. Joan was preceded in death by her parents, Merle and F. Naomi (Hedrick) Sanders; husband, Charles E. Gross; daughter-in-law, Barbara Goss; and step-grandson, Jason Tatlock.Visitation will be from 1 – 4 p.m. Sunday at the Miller–Roscka Funeral Home of Monticello. Celebration of Life Service will be at the funeral home at 4 p.m. Sunday with Rev. Chris Dodson of the Monticello Christian Church officiating.Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the I.O.O.F.
